Immigration Update September 2021

Prayer Vigil & Car Rally for Citizenship

In September and October, lawmakers in Congress will take votes that determine how and whether immigrant legalization will be part of a final budget reconciliation bill.

The Yes Immigrants Forward campaign in Orange County presents the YES to Citizenship car and community rally in Fullerton on September 18, 2021.

We rally to protect the $107 billion set aside for legalization in the budget reconciliation bill.     We rally to ensure the Senate Judiciary committee creates a program to cover as many of the 11 million as possible. And we rally to press the parliamentarian to include immigration reform in the budget. This is what it takes to finally achieve immigration reform after 35 years of waiting.

Shut Down Adelanto Coalition

CLUE, a member of the Shut Down Adelanto Coalition, co-sponsored a Virtual Congressional Town Hall on September 9.  In the absence of federal solutions to close CA immigrant jails, the Shut Down Adelanto Coalition united to close the largest ICE detention center in the West Coast, the Adelanto Detention Center.

More than one hundred participants were in attendance, including many CLUE members. Congressional representatives Judy Chu and Alan Lowenthal were in attendance, in addition to staff representing about four other reps. It was a very powerful event, especially hearing testimony from former detained immigrants. Also, CLUE was one of the panelists.

At this event, local Southern California organizations provided Southern California Members of Congress and the general public with information about: the Adelanto ICE Detention Center’s medical neglect, harsh conditions, and ongoing violations of human rights, and the urgent need to close the immigrant detention center, to provide relief to our communities that ICE and GEO harm.

We had the opportunity to hear from a variety of diverse voices. These voices included those of people who were formerly detained at the immigrant jail, legal providers, and community organizers working to permanently close GEO Group’s operations in Adelanto.
