Santa Monica, CA - Housekeepers of the JW Marriott Santa Monica Le Merigot Hotel gathered today at 5pm outside the Santa Monica City Hall to celebrate their victory. These brave workers voted yesterday 27 to 15 to form a Union with UNITE HERE Local 11.
This group of predominantly immigrant women stood up to Columbia Sussex, a huge corporation, and prevailed after management hired MPI Consulting who ran an intense union-busting campaign against them.
“With Trump being elected President, we felt we urgently needed to become a union to stand up for immigrant workers under attack,” said Filadelfia Alcala. “I’m very proud of what my coworkers and I were able to achieve, a small group of immigrant women against a giant corporation, and we beat them!”
The wake of the Trump electoral victory, the Santa Monica community rallied behind these women to make sure they will be treated with dignity and respect at their workplace.
As their first action as an official Union, the Le Merigot workers will attend the 6pm Santa Monica Planning Commission meeting to speak about the proposed Downtown Santa Monica Community Plan.
